Chyběla snad jen hudba, která by doplnila celkovou mrtvolnou atmosféru. Natáhl jsem z posledních sil svoji ruku a pustil si k odchodu z tohoto světa kazetu "Calcified Trophies of Violence".
OSSUARIUM mě pitvají hezky postaru, stylem, jakým to dělávaly a dělají takové smečky jako CIANIDE, AUTOPSY, INCANTATION, FUNEBRARUM, ROTTREVORE, DISMA. Z dnešních, novějších skupin, mi lehce práce těchto pekelníků připomíná dánské UNDERGANG, případně PHRENELITH. Z reproduktorů ke mě ztéká pravý reálný old school death metal.
Underground nesmí nikdy zemřít! Peklo nemůže jen tak zničeho nic zavřít své brány. Pokud zde budou kapely jako OSSUARIUM, tak o to strach nemám. Skladby na jejich prvotině působí jako nahrubo nasekaná tma, smíchaná s úlomky kostí a smrti. Mám rád zvuk nahrávky, líbí se mi stylový obal i chorobou nasáklý vokál. "Calcified Trophies of Violence" je deskou, která pálí, řeže, drásá a bolí zároveň. Je přesně tím druhem hudby, kterou si musíte pustit každý den k večeru, když jdete na svůj oblíbený hřbitov. Mám rád atmosféru opuštěných katakomb, miluji chvíle strávené ve stínu nakloněných náhrobků. Tohle album je jako stará zkažená krev! Death metal ve své shnilé podobě! Velmi dobře!

I was invited to the morgue house, they mixed the tasty deadly cocktail. So I could watch how they dissect my poor body alive. The blood was splashing across the room on the walls, among the graves was fog and in front of me was a horror movie, like from the 80s and 90s. The only thing missing was the music which would fulfil the whole deadly atmosphere. I pulled my head with the last pieces of strength I had and I played the cassette “Calcified Trophies of Violence” while I was leaving this world.
OSSUARIUM dissect me nice in the old way, the way other bands used to do it – bands like CIANIDE, AUTOPSY, INCANTATION, FUNEBRARUM, ROTTREVORE, DISMA. From today´s bands this band slightly reminds me of the Danish band UNDERGANG, or PHRENELITH. From the speakers I can hear the real old school death metal.
The underground must never die! The hell must not just close its gates. If there are bands like OSSUARIUM, I am not afraid. The songs on their first album sounds like roughly chopped darkness, mixed with pieces of bones and death. I like the sound of the album, the stylish cover and the sick vocal. “Calcified Trophies of Violence” is an album which burns, cuts, cracks and hurt at the same time. It is exactly the kind of music you have to play every evening when you go to see your favourite graveyard. I like the atmosphere of abandoned catacomb, I like the times I spend in the shadows of inclined tombstones. This album is like old bad blood! Death metal in its rotten form! Very good!

Z kostelů se již dávno vytratil obyčejný život. Zbylo jen mentorování a tuny prázdných slov. Modlíš se k mrtvému, který s tvojí duší nemá nic společného. Potkáváš poslední dobou spoustu zlých lidí. Poslední, co ti zbylo je naděje a hudba. Mám rád vznešenou náladu katedrál, nasávám s chutí atmosféru opuštěných chrámů. Tisíce osudů otisknutých do kamenných zdí. Tváře světců a nahoře u varhan sedí kapela MY SILENT WAKE. Ano, mám jejich hudbu spojenou s návštěvou kostela. Poslouchám nové album "There Was Death" a přemýšlím, co vlastně znamená víra.
"There Was Death" jdou ve stejných stopách, jako MY DYING BRIDE, PARADISE LOST, NOVEMBERS DOOM, ASHEN MORTALITY. Zároveň ale mají svůj jasný a zřetelný rukopis. Skladby jsou doslova nasáklé atmosférou gotických staveb a smutkem. Vidím před sebou malý hřbitov v horách. Všichni se zde znají a každý pohřeb je událostí a osobním prožitkem. Tady je ještě víra čistá, nezkažená a syrová. Líbí se mi zvuk, chladný i bolestivý zároveň, obdivuji malbu na obalu. Procházím spolu s kapelou opuštěnými katedrálami. Znovu a znovu se vracím do katakomb, abych znovu povstal z popela a šířil doom a death metal. Nové album mě zcela pohltilo, zklidnilo moji mysl a nasměřovalo mě na onen svět. Hledím k nebi a čekám! Krásný hudební zážitek, plný vznešenosti.

You sit in the wooden benches. It is Sunday morning and you should meet God today. You doubt, you have been in doubt for a while. The ordinary life has vanished from churches a long time ago. There is only mentoring and tons of empty words left. You are praying to a dead who has nothing in common with its souls. In a last few days you have been meeting many evil people. The only thing left is hope and music.
I like the noble mood of cathedrals, I soak the atmosphere of abandoned temples with joy. Thousands of fates printed in stone walls. The faces of the saints and above, where the pipe organ is, is sitting the band MY SILENT WAKE. Yes, for me their music is connected with a visit of a church. I listen to their new album “There Was Death” and I am thinking about what faith really is.
“There Was Death” follows the same steps as MY DYING BRIDE, PARADISE LOST, NOVEMBER DOOM, ASHEN MORTALITY. They also have a clear and readable handwriting. The songs are literally soaked up with the atmosphere of gothic buildings and sadness. Right in front of me I can see a small graveyard in the mountains. Everybody knows each other and every funeral is an event and a personal experience. Here, the faith is pure, unspoilt and raw. I like the sound, cold and hurtful at the same time, I admire the painting on the cover. I am walking through abandoned cathedrals with the band. Again and again I am coming back to catacombs, to wake up and continue to spread the glory of the doom and death metal. The new album absorbed me completely, it calmed down my mind and directed me to another world. I am looking towards the sky and I am waiting! A beautiful musical experience, full of nobleness.

Propadá skrz kostnatou dlaň prach z tvého nebohého těla. Skláníš se nad vlastním náhrobkem, spokojený, že jsi konečně nalezl svůj klid. Už tě nebavila všechna bolest a tíha světa, které si cítil na svých bedrech. Nabídnutá ruka nešla odmítnout. Vždyť, kdo by řekl ne samotné Smrti?
První, co jsem u poslechu nové desky francouzského šílence Stephana Thiriona pocítil, tak byl nekonečný mráz v zádech. Hudba na mě působila ihned velmi smutně, naléhavě, jako poslední přání před popravou. Severské, do švédského stylu laděné melodie, mě uklidnily i rozdrásaly moji duši ostrými drápy riffů.
"A Fleur de Peau" je poctou mrazivému vichru, sněhové bouři, opuštěným zasněženým cestám. Inspirována švédským death metalem (GRAVE, DISMEMBER, ENTOMBED, EDGE OF SANITY), ale i blackem a thrashem. S nezbytnými doom metalovými náladami, černou jiskrou i určitou bolestí, kterou ze skladeb cítím. Album se nesnaží objevovat dříve objevené, ale spíše pomocí hudby vytváří pocit bezbřehé beznaděje. Rád jsem se nechal unášet na vlnách smutku, ostrých řezajících nápadů i dlouhých pohledů do krajiny. Pro chvíle rozjímání, pro okamžiky, kdy zastavíte své kroky a čekáte na další směr, v tyto momenty jsem si "A Fleur de Peau" užil nejvíce. Zaujala mě pochmurná nálada celé desky, která je ošetřena velmi dobrým zvukem i pěkný temný obal, ale hlavně jasný cíl - zmrazit vás na věky. "Podej mi svoji ruku": řekla Smrt a IN SHADOWS AND DUST. Přijal jsem moc rád. Příjemně bolestivé album!

The ash from your poor body falls through a bony palm. You bend over your own gravestone, happy that you finally found your peace. You were tired of the weight and pain of the world which you felt on your shoulders. The offered hand could not be dismissed. Well, who would say no to the death itself?
The first thing I felt while listening to the new album by French madman Stephan Thirion was the endless frost in my back. The music seemed very sad in the beginning, urgent, like the last wish before the execution. Nordic, styled in the Swedish style melodies calmed me down but also scattered my soul with sharp claws of riffs.
“A Fleur de Peau” is an honour to cold wind, snow storm, abandoned snowy roads. Inspired by the Swedish death metal (GRAVE, DISMEMBER, ENTOMBED, EDGE OF SANITY) but also black and thrash. With the necessary doom metal moods, black sparkle and the pains which I can feel from the songs. Albums does not try to discover the previously discovered things but more with the music they create a feeling of hopelessness. I liked to let myself carry on the waves of sadness, sharp cutting ideas and long views of the landscape. For the contemplation moments when stop your steps and wait to the next direction. Those moments where the times when I enjoyed the album “A Fleur de Peau” the most. I was interested in the gloomy atmosphere of the whole album which was treated with the good sound. The nice and dark cover but also the clear goal – to freeze you forever. “Give me your hand”: said the Death and IN SHADOWS AND DUST. I agreed. Very painful album!

Chvíli jsem poslouchal, co si to páni řezníci zrovna pouštějí za muziku a souhlasně kýval hlavou. Ano, tady jsem správně, zde se mi bude líbit, dodal jsem ještě a poprosil, aby mi kazetu "Unseen Divinity" pustili ještě jednou dokola. Je totiž přesně tím krvavým odkazem CARCASS, TERRORIZER, NASUM, BLOOD, REGURGITATE, NAPALM DEATH, který mi dělá moc dobře na mé černé duši. Hnilobou nasáklé riffy, neučesaný zvuk, zkrátka a jednoduše, old school death grind, jak se patří.
"Unseen Divinity" je deskou, která je určena pro všechny milovníky nekompromisní, extrémní hudby, kde se na nějakou tu špinavost nehledí. Nic pro slabé povahy, spíš se jedná o starodávný, poctivý a rezavý extrém, který vás rozmázne po podlaze. Vytrhejte mi všechny vlasy, urvěte mé ruce z kloubů, ale pořád budu mít podobnou hudbu rád. Je pro mě totiž esencí rebelie, krásných mokvajících ran i praskajících kostí. Pokud tedy máte chuť, vezměte s sebou sekáček na maso a pojďme spolu naporcovat další maso. Povedená death grindová desky ve starém střihu!

For a while I listened to the music which the butchers were listening to and I nodded my head. “Yes, I am on the right place, this is what I like”: I said and I asked them to play the cassette “Unseen Divinity” one more time.
It is exactly the bloody reference of CARCASS, TERRORIZER, NASUM, BLOOD, REGURGITATE, NAPALM DEATH which feels so nice to my black soul. Mouldy riffs, chaotic sound, well just old school death grind.
“Unseen Divinity” is an album for all fans of uncompromising and extreme music which does not care about any dirt. This is not for weak people, this is rather ancient, real and rusty extreme which will blurs you on the floor. Strike all of my hair, pull out my hands from the joints but I will still like similar music. This is the essence or the rebellion, beautiful wet wounds and cracking bones. If you want to, take a meat smasher with you and come to smash some flesh. Good death grind album in the old cut!

Krok za krokem. Pomalu a nejistě, kráčím zatížen rakví. Úděl nás nosičů vzpomínek je smutný a špatně placený. Chodíváme v čelech průvodů, tváříme se zachmuřeně. Nasloucháme posledním vůlím a ukládáme mrtvé do hrobů. Jsme jako černí havrani, jsme stíny noci, které povstaly a přišli si pro další oběť. Umíráček už zvoní. Je čas, čas na doom metal.
Ve Finsku moc dobře vědí, jak zhudebnit smutek. Důkazem je nekonečná řada doom metalových kapel. Z těch také vzešla skupina HALLATAR, která pokračuje v odkazech těch nejlepších - SWALLOW THE SUN, AMORPHIS, ale i třeba britských ESOTERIC. Výsledkem je funerální záležitost té největší kvality. U pomalých metalových stylů záleží hodně na vytvoření kýžené atmosféry. HALLATAR nesložili dílo ničím nové, ale rozhodně by nemělo chybět v žádné sbírce fanoušků stylu. Jedná se totiž o hudbu, která vás spálí mrazem.
Na "No Stars upon the Bridge" nebylo nic ponecháno náhodě. Perfektně je ošetřen zvuk, skladby mají jasný a přesně zacílený směr a vokály bědují jako plačící pozůstalí. V některých momentech mi sice úplně "nesedí", ale to je spíš můj problém. Jinak se jedná v podstatě o křišťálově čistý atmosférický funeral doom metal, který vás uloží k poslednímu spánku. My hrobníci moc dobře víme, o čem je řeč. Jednou za čas bývá dobré se zastavit a uvědomit si, že čas nám vyměřený, není nekonečný. U podobných desek to tak vnímám a říkám si, jak jsme malí vzhledem k vesmíru. Rád bych se s kapelou ztratil ve finských lesích, navštívil tamní hřbitovy a užil si koncert v katakombách. Album se trefilo přesně do mého nitra a nemůžu jinak - musím jej chválit. Vidím před sebou další pohřeb a už vím, co budu poslouchat, až uložíme nebožtíka do země. Pomalá, smutná hudba, u které se ocitnete ve smutečním průvodu!

We listen to the last wills and put the dead in their graves. We are black as ravens, we are the shadows of the night which have risen and have come for their first victim. The dying ring is already ringing. It is time for some doom metal.
In Finland they know how to transform sadness into music. The proof is the endless list of doom metal bands. The band HALLATAR has risen from those and it continues in the tradition of the best bands like – SWALLOW THE SUN, AMORPHIS but also the British band ESOTERIC. The result is a funeral album of the highest quality. When you listen to slow metal styles it is really important to make the desired atmosphere. HALLATAR did not compose an album which would be revolutionary but it should be in every collections of a fan of this style. This music will burn you with cold.
On the album “No Stars upon the Bridge” was nothing left for chance. The sound is perfectly treated, songs have clear and precisely targeted direction and the vocals wobble like crying survivors. In some moments it does not “fit” for me but it might be just my problem. It is crystal clear atmospheric funeral doom metal which will make you sleep on the death bed. All gravediggers know that. It is good to sometimes stop and realize that the time we have on the earth is not endless. I perceive this with similar albums and I tell myself how small we are in comparison the Universe. I would like to get lost in Finnish forests with the band, to visit the local cemeteries and to enjoy a concerts in the catacombs. This album hit my inside exactly and I cannot do anything else than just praise it. I can see another funeral in front of me and I know what I will listen to when we will put the dead body in the ground. Slow, sad music which will make you walk in the funeral parade!
Zdravím HOODED MENACE! Počúvam vašu čerstvú nahrávku „Ossuarium Silhouettes Unhallowed“ už asi desiatykrát a stále sa mi zdá lepšia a lepšia. Je neuveriteľné ako sa Vám darí držať doom a death metal v tak vyváženej rovine. Tá atmosféra je úžasná! Na to, že album vyšiel len koncom januára, zaznamenala som nespočetne veľa recenzií. Aké sú ohlasy a ako ste vy sami spokojní s nahrávkou?
Ahoj! Ďakujem za milé slová. Je skvelé počuť, ako sa vnáraš do nášho nového albumu. Ohlasy sú zatiaľ naozaj úžasné, mnoho ľudí označilo album „Ossuarium Silhouettes Unhallowed“ za náš doposiaľ najlepší počin alebo najlepší album od nahrávky „Never Cross The Death“, a hoci je pre mňa veľmi ťažké odosobniť sa a byť objektívny, nemyslím si, že by som nesúhlasil s týmito komentármi, keďže sme sami veľmi spokojní s výsledkom.
Lasse, ty si v HOODED MENACE jediným pôvodným členom a dlhý čas ste tvorili a hrali len vo dvojici s bubeníkom Pekka Koskelo. Čiže skladanie hudby, gitary, basy, texty a vokály si mal predpokladám v réžií výhradne ty. Momentálne sa prezentujete už v plnej zostave. Zmenil sa nejako proces skladania alebo máš stále pod palcom všetko ty? A čo sa stalo s Pekka Koskelo? Vy ako dvojica ste to ťahali spolu celkom dlho.
Doposiaľ som celú našu hudbu napísal ja a tak tomu bolo aj na novom albume. Pokiaľ ide o texty, prácu ohľadom nich si rozdelili Teemu, Harri a zapojil som sa aj ja. Až čas ukáže, do akej miery budú noví členovia prispievať do tvorivého procesu, či už hudobne alebo lyricky. Pokiaľ ide o Pekka, jeho pokračovanie v kapele sa trochu skomplikovalo po tom, čo sme premiestnili náš „hlavný stan” a teda skúšobňu z Joensuu do Helsínk. Obe mestá sú od seba dosť vzdialené. Harri a Teemu žijú v Helsinkách (rovnako ako Otso a Antti) a ja som sa taktiež chystal presťahovať do hlavného mesta, takže mi to prišlo ako dobrý nápad začať skúšať už tam. Našťastie Pekka mal stále záujem nahrať bicie na novom albume.
A čo súčasná zostava, je pre chalanov HOODED MENACE kapelou číslo 1 alebo majú aj iné kapely/projekty? Ako to vyzerá na skúškach, funguje tá často omieľaná „chémia“? Sú v kapele celkom krátko. Predpokladám, že do tvorivého procesu na novej doske sa nezapojili, alebo áno?
Po prvé musím uviesť na správnu mieru jednu vec, Otso (bicie) a Antti (basa) začali hrať v kapele až po nahratí albumu "Ossuarium ...". Spôsobilo to už veľa nedorozumení v zmysle, kto album nahral a kto je vlastne v súčasnej zostave. Aby som to teda upresnil, na nahrávaní nového albumu sa podieľala nasledovná zostava: Lasse (gitara, basa), Teemu (gitara), Pekka (bicie) a Harri (vokály). Áno, každý z nás hrá aj v iných kapelách; Otso v KRYPTS, Harri v HORSE LATITUDES atď., Teemu v HARHAISKU a Antti v DEVENIAL VERDICT atď. V skutočnosti som jediný, kto nemá inú kapelu, s ktorou by som aj koncertoval. Samozrejme, aj ja som mal niekoľko vedľajších projektov, ale v poslednej dobe toho nebolo až tak veľa (naposledy vydané bolo MCD LOBOTOMY DEPT) a nejde o žiadne živé kapely. Doteraz sa nám s chalanmi skvelo jammovalo. Priniesli do kapely čerstvú energiu a nadšenie.
Veľmi citeľná zmena nastala pri vokáli. „Ossuarium Silhouettes Unhallowed“ je prvým albumom, ktorý si nenaspieval ty sám. Myslím, že Harri má oproti tebe oveľa čistejší vokál, nie je taký prehnitý. Čo si myslíš o tom ty? Ako prijmú túto zmenu fanúšikovia?
Áno samozrejme, Harriho farba hlasu je odlišná od tej mojej, ale myslím si, že jeho spev veľmi dobre zapasoval najmä do nového hudobného materiálu, no prináša aj nový level energie do starších skladieb, pretože jeho vokál znie oveľa dynamickejšie. Má taký chladný growl typu Paradise Lost/Winter, ktorý mám osobne veľmi veľmi rád. Celkovo, ohlasy týkajúce sa konkrétne vokálu boli veľmi pozitívne, ale samozrejme vždy sa nájdu ľudia, ktorí sú touto zmenou sklamaní. Nemôžte vyhovieť každému, ale my sa nemôžeme z nového vokálu tešiť viac ako teraz a to je pre nás koniec-koncov najdôležitejšie.
Nový album vyšiel u Season of Mist. Od vášho debutu ste label zmenili niekoľkokrát, takmer každý dlhohrajúci album vydalo iné vydavateľstvo. Predchádzajúce dva počiny však vyšli u Relapse Records, čo je tiež nemalý label. Prečo ste nezotrvali tam a prešli ste k Season of Mist? Porovnaj trochu spoluprácu s týmito labelami.
Našu dohodu s Relapse sme po dvoch albumoch splnili, takže sme chceli zistiť, čo v tomto smere bude pre nás najlepšie. Relapse odviedol naozaj dobrú robotu, ale nemali sme pocit, že je to nevyhnutne label, s ktorým by sme chceli spolupracovať aj na ďalších albumoch. Pri najmenšom sme sa chceli trochu porozhliadnuť, chápeš. Season of Mist boli nadšení myšlienkou spolupráce s nami a ponúkli nám tie najlepšie podmienky, takže sme do toho šli s nimi. Doteraz idú veci so SoM celkom dobre. Máme skvelú komunikáciu a náš nový album vynikajúco propagujú. Takže zatiaľ všetko super.
Čo vaša spolupráca s Adamom Burkom? Ako vznikla, ktoré jeho práce ťa oslovili, že si si povedal, že chceš pre cover albumu použiť práve jeho dielo? Minulý rok vyšlo niekoľko albumov s úžasnými obalmi, pod ktoré sa podpísal práve on (Loss, Sósltafir, Artificial Brain).
Bol to práve cover posledného albumu LOSS, ktorý ulahodil môjmu oku. Hneď som sa spýtal gitaristu Tima na autora a netrvalo dlho, už som sa dohováral priamo s Adamom Burkeom o hlavnej línií k obalu nového albumu HOODED MENACE. Adam odviedol excelentnú robotu. Tá maľba perfektne odráža atmosféru albumu.
Kto vlastne album produkoval? Zmenili ste nahrávacie štúdio, metódy, zvuk oproti minulej doske? Ako by si celkovo porovnal nový album s predchádzajúcimi počinmi?
Tentokrát sme spolupracovali s Jaime Gomez Arellano (Paradise Lost, Cathedral, Ghost), ktorý sa postaral o mix a mastering albumu v jeho Orgone Studios vo Veľkej Británii. Boli sme vo všeobecnosti nadšení zvukom bicích a obzvlášť tými, ktoré vytvoril pre album Paradise Lost "The Plague Within", takže sme chceli vedieť, čo by mohol vytvoriť pre nás. Celkovo sme veľmi radi, ako sa veci vyvíjali. Určite zvážime spoluprácu s ním aj v budúcnosti.
Myslím, že "Ossuarium ..." je trochu melodickejší a melancholickejší album oproti našim predchádzajúcim nahrávkam. Možno aj trochu viac chytľavý. Použilo sa viac dynamiky a hĺbok a mám pocit, že je o niečo viac vyspelejší v každom smere. Počúvaním môžete veľmi jednoducho zistiť, že ide o nás, možno s mierne uhladeným zvukom.
Pri písaní textov sa stále nechávaš inšpirovať starými horormi? Zmenil sa nejakým spôsobom koncept, pozadie textov na novej doske oproti minulej?
Áno, okrem iného stále sme inšpirovaní starými hororovými filmami, ale spôsob písania sa trochu zmenil. Rovnako ako na "Darkness Drips Forth", texty na novej doske, respektíve niektoré z nich, nie sú založené, ale práve inšpirované filmami. Medzi tým (byť založený alebo inšpirovaný) je veľký rozdiel. Akýkoľvek zdroj inšpirácie máte, môže byť celkom ťažko odhaliteľný alebo sa úplne vytratí vďaka presvedčivejším myšlienkam. Je tu nejaký začiatočný bod, kde sa proces odštartuje, ale z tohto miesta sa môžete pohnúť kamkoľvek, ak máte ten správny druh cítenia. Je to všetko o pocitoch a atmosfére a texty sa dajú interpretovať mnohými spôsobmi. Je to veľmi surrealistické a snové, ale tak ako vždy texty sú zakorenené v temných a hrozivých skutočnostiach.
Čo ťa inšpiruje a nabáda k skladaniu takej temnej a pochmúrnej hudby? Musíš mať pri skladaní hudby zlú náladu alebo dané emocionálne rozpoloženie nehrá v procese žiadnu rolu?
Hudba plodí ďalšiu hudbu. Odtiaľ to pramení. Ako sa hovorí, prvé kapely, ktoré sa vám dostanú pod kožu s vami zostanú navždy. Vyrástol som v 80-tych rokoch so všetkými tými heavy metal vecami až som nakoniec počas svojej cesty objavil extrémnejšiu hudbu. Dalo mi to do života viac radosti, inšpirovalo ma to, spravilo to môj život omnoho vzrušujúcejší. Hudba z tých čias je u mňa stále na prvom mieste, do dnešného dňa ju mám asi najradšej. Pochádzajúc z tohto prostredia som našiel najpochmúrnejšie osudové osvietenie. A išpiráciu.
Pri písaní textov môžem byť šťastný alebo melancholický, ale nikdy nie príliš hlboko v zlom emocionálnom rozpoložení. To však neznamená, že v skladbách nie je žiadny hnev a úzkosť, pretože som si istý, že do procesu písania v jeho priebehu preniká celý rad emócií. Fínski ľudia sú údajne náchylní k melanchólii kvôli dlhým, temným a studeným zimám, ako aj izolovanej polohe Fínska. Túto vlastnosť dokážem rozpoznať aj v sebe, takže je možné, že niečo môže vyžarovať aj odtiaľ.
Aká hudba ťa momentálne najviac oslovuje? Nájde sa tam aj niečo netradičné z pohľadu metalového fanúšika? Čo ťa v poslednej dobe najviac chytilo, odporuč nám nejakú dobrú kapelu.
Nie som si istý, či nasledujúce kapely mali nejaký vplyv na HOODED MENACE, možno jedine v súvislosti s intenzitou a pútavosťou, ale tu teda máte niektoré veci, ktoré som naposledy počúval: RATT (prvé dva dlhohrajúce albumy), OZZY (éra s Jakeom a Randym), skoršie veci YNGWIE MALMSTEEN, RACER X, JUDAS PRIEST, VAN HALEN (album Roth), dokonca aj nejaké spojenia jazzu s rockovou muzikou, atď. No a z takých tých novších kapiel by som vybral POWER TRIP a NECROT. Tí sú naozaj úžasní.
A čo koncerty, plánujete turné na podporu novej dosky? Zatiaľ som vás videla len na festivalom pódiu, ale myslím, že vaša muzika sa viac hodí do klubu.
Budeme hrať na festivale Roadburn v Holandsku a Kill-Town Death Fest v Nemecku, kde špeciálne odohráme celý album “Fulfill the Curse” k desiatemu výročiu jeho vydania. A práve teraz, keď spisujem odpovede do tohto rozhovoru, som na ceste do Helsínk, kde sa uskutoční náš koncert k vydanej doske. Večer budú otvárať KRYPTS, takže pre nášho bubeníka Otsa to bude znamenať dvojité povinnosti. Taktiež sme potvrdili účasť na festivale North of the Wall vo Veľkej Británii koncom apríla a je toho oveľa viac, ale žiaľ nemôžem ešte nič zverejniť. Taktiež dúfame, že sa nám podarí v lete nejaké európske turné, ale v tomto momente nič nie je stopercentné.
Spomínaš si na vaše vystúpenie na festivale Obscene Extreme? Bol to trochu netradičný štart tohto festivalu, ale žánrová zmena prišla podľa mňa veľmi vhod, ja som si ten večer užila. Myslím, že to bol aj váš úplne prvý koncert v Českej republike. Ako si naň spomínaš, na atmosféru, ľudí? A čo váš koncert v Prahe, užili ste si ho?
Áno, koncert na Obsene Extreme bol naším prvým vystúpením u Vás a bol skvelý. Spomínam si, že osobne môj výkon nebol stopercentný, ale bolo úžasné tam byť, o tom niet pochýb. Rád by som sa tam jedného dňa vrátil. Klubový koncert v Prahe bol úžasný. Bol súčasťou nášho európskeho turné a pamätám si, že ten večer bol obzvlášť dobrý. Áno, mám pekné spomienky z vašej úžasnej krajiny.

Hello HOODED MENACE! I am listening to your fresh record „Ossuarium Silhouettes Unhallowed“ almost tenth time and it seems to be better and better. It is unbelievable how you can keep such balance between doom and death metal. The atmosphere is amazing! Regarding the date of releasing (26th January), I have noticed a huge amount of reviews. What are the feedbacks to the new album up to now and how are you satisfied with the record?
Hi! Thanks for the good words! Glad to hear you dig the new album. The feedback has been pretty amazing so far actually. A lot of people have said “Ossuarium…” is our best album to date or the best since “Never Cross the Dead”, and while it´s a bit hard for me to be very objective, I don´t think I´d disagree with such comments as we´re very satisfied with the results.
Lasse, you are the only one original member of HOODED MENACE, but a long time you have played with the drummer Pekka Koskelo. I suppose the composing of all material – guitars, bass guitar, vocals, lyrics were under your direction. Now, HOODED MENACE is presented with full line-up. Has the process of composing changed somehow or still everything regarding the writing of a new material is only your job? And what happened with Pekka Koskelo? You as a team have collaborated together quite for a long time.
I´ve written all our music so far - also on the new album. When comes to lyrics, the job´s been split between Teemu, Harri and myself. Time will tell if the newest members will contribute in the future, be it musically or lyrically.
As for Pekka, things got a bit too complicated for him to continue in the band after we relocated our headquarters (read: rehearsal place) from Joensuu to Helsinki. The two cities are quite far away from each other. Harri and Teemu are Helsinki-based (as well as Otso and Antti) and I´ve been planning to move to the capital city too, so it felt like a good idea to start rehearsing there already. Luckily Pekka wanted to play the drums on the new album still.
And what about the new line-up, is HOODED MENACE for new members the band number one or have they another bands/projects? How it looks like at rehearsal, is between you that legendary “chemistry”? I suppose they are in the band only short time. Did they participate in the writing process on the latest album?
First of all, Otso (drums) and Antti (bass) did not join the band until AFTER “Ossuarium…” was recorded. This has caused a lot of misunderstandings about who are playing on the album, and while we are at it, I will set the record straight; the line-up on the new album is: Lasse (guitar, bass), Teemu (guitar), Pekka (drums), and Harri (vocals).
Yeah, everyone of us play in other bands too; Otso in Krypts, Harri in Horse Latitudes etc., Teemu in Harhaisku, and Antti in Devenial Verdict etc. In fact I´m the only one who doesn’t have another band that plays gigs. Surely I´ve done a lot of side-projects, but lately not so much (Lobotomy Dept MCD being the latest) and they are never live-bands.
So far it´s been great jamming with the new guys. They have brought some fresh energy and enthusiasm to the band.
A very noticeable change occurred at the post of the vocalist. "Ossuarium Silhouettes Unhallowed" is the first album, where you did not record the vocals. I think Harri has a much clearer vocal than you, it is not so “rotten” if you know what I mean. What do you think about it? What do you expect, how the fans will accept this change?
Yeah, Harri´s tone is different from mine for sure, but I think it fits like a glove especially to the new album material, but there´s also new level of energy to the older material as his voice is more dynamic sounding. He´s got that cool Paradise Lost/Winter type of growl that I like very, very much.
Overall the feedback has been very positive actually, but of course there are also people who are disappointed about this switch. You cannot please everyone, but we could not be much happier about the new vocals and that´s the most important thing anyway.
The new album was released by Season of Mist. Since your debut, you've changed the label a couple of times, almost every record has been released by the different label. However, the two previous albums were released by Relapse Records. Why did you come over from Relapse to Season of Mist?
Our deal with Relapse was fulfilled after two album, so we wanted to check what else there might be for us. Relapse did pretty good job, but we didn´t feel like it was the label we necessarily wanted to be on for the next couple albums as well. At least we wanted to look around, you know. Season of Mist was excited about working with us and offered the best deal, so we went with them. Things have been good with SoM so far. We have a good communication and they are doing good promotion for the new album. So far so good.
What about your cooperation with Adam Burke? How did you choose this artist? Which his work has convinced you to pick exactly him for painting the album's cover? Last year, a few albums with amazing Burke’s cover art were released (Loss, Sósltafir, Artificial Brain).
It was the latest album cover of Loss that caught my eye, so I asked the band´s guitarist Tim about the artist and soon I was talking to Adam Burke about the guidelines for the new Hooded Menace album cover art. Adam did excellent job. The painting fits perfectly to the atmosphere of the album.
Who exactly produced the latest album? Did you change the recording studio, some methods, sound compared to the previous album? Try to compare "Ossuarium Silhouettes Unhallowed" with the older records in general.
This time we worked with Jaime Gomez Arellano (Paradise Lost, Cathedral, Ghost) who mixed and mastered the album at his Orgone Studios in the UK. We really loved the drum sound, especially, that he created for Paradise Lost´s “The Plague Within” album, so we wanted to see what he could do with us. Overall we´re very pleased how things turned out. We definitely consider working with him in the future as well.
I think “Ossuarium…” is a bit more melodic and melancholic than our previous records. Maybe more catchy too. There´s more dynamics and depth to it and it just feels a bit more mature in every way. You can easily hear it´s us, but with a slightly refined sound.
Concerning the writing of lyrics, are you still fascinated and inspired by the old horror movies? Has the concept or background of lyrics changed on the new record?
Yeah, we´re still sucking inspiration from old horror films among other things, but the approach is different. Just like on “Darkness Drips Forth”, the new album´s lyrics, or some of them, are not based but inspired by movies. A big difference right there. Whatever the source of inspiration may be, it can get pretty heavily veiled or totally vanished for the more compelling ideas. There´s a starting point that sparks the process, but it can go anywhere from there as long as it has the right kind of feel to it. It is all about feel and atmosphere and you can interpret the lyrics in many ways. It´s pretty surrealist and dreamy stuff, but rooted in all things gloomy and horrifying as always.
What inspires and encourages you to make such dark and gloomy music? Do you have to have a bad state of mind when composing music, does the emotional mood play some role in the process?
Music breeds music. That´s where it stems from. As they say, the first bands you really get into stay with you forever. I grew up in the 80´s with all the heavy metal stuff and discovered the more extreme sounds along the way. It gave me pleasure, inspired me and simply made life more exciting. The music from those days is still the stuff I love the most to this day and age. Coming from this background, I find the the bleakest doom uplifting. And inspiring.
When writing, I can be happy or melancholic, but never too deep in a bad state of mind. That´s not to say there´s no anger and anxiety put into the songs as I´m sure a wide range of emotions leak in during the writing-process. Finnish people are said to be inclined to melancholy due to long, dark and cold winters as well as the isolated location. I can recognize this quality in me, so perhaps something emanates from there.
What kind of music currently influences you the most? Is there something unusual from the metal fans view? What has caught you the most recently? Recommend us some good band...
I don´t know if the following bands have had much influence on Hooded Menace - perhaps in terms of the intensity and catchiness if anything - but here you have some of the stuff I´ve been jamming lately: Ratt (first two full albums), Ozzy (Jake and Randy -era only), early Yngwie J. Malmsteen, Racer X, Judas Priest, Van Halen (Roth albums), even some jazz fusion rock stuff etc. For the more recent names, and especially in metal, I´d pick Power Trip and Necrot. They´re quite amazing.
And what about concerts, are you planning a tour to support a new record? So far I have only seen you at the festival, but I think your music is more suitable for the club.
We´ll play “Fulfill the Curse” the 10 year anniversary sets at Roadburn (NL) and Kill-Town Death Fest (DK) and I´m typing this interview on my way to Helsinki for our record release show. Krypts will be opening, so it´ll be double duty for our drummer Otso. We´re also booked to play North of the Wall Festival (UK) in late April and there´s more, but unfortunately I can´t speak of them yet. Also, we hope to tour Europe in the summer but nothing´s set in stone 100% as we speak.
Do you remember your performance at Obscene Extreme? It was a bit unusual start of that festival, but the genre change was very desirable, I really enjoyed that evening. I think it was your very first concert in the Czech Republic. How do you remember it, the atmosphere, and the people? And what about your performance in Prague, did you enjoy it?
Yeah, Obscene Extreme was our first time in Czech and it was good. I remember my own performance was a bit sloppy, but it was great to be there for sure. Would love to do it again one day. The club gig in Prague was great. It was part of our European tour and I remember that night was especially good. Yeah, nice memories from you beautiful country.
